The Diagnosis Call

“Ms. Richardson. Your biopsy report came back positive for breast cancer. I’m sorry to pass this news on to you.” That single sentence carried a weight that left me breathless.

I asked for all the numbers, the stage, the size, everything I could know. But the doctor only told me that I would be connected with a team to go over treatment. There were no details, no answers, only a door opening into uncertainty.

The air felt heavy as my chest tightened and my thoughts scattered in a thousand directions. My mind immediately went to my daughter, who still needed me. I thought of my brother and our business, my parents who had just recently moved here, and the life I feared I might lose. Fear tried to take hold in that moment, pressing me with the weight of uncertainty. I could not change the words I had just heard, but I knew they would test how I chose to see and walk through what was ahead.

We hung up, and I sat silently by the window of my office, overlooking the city below me. The world outside kept moving, but mine had stopped.

Reflection

That phone call marked the beginning of a journey I could not control. It forced me to confront the reality that life can change in a single moment and that no amount of planning or preparation can shield us from what is written into our path. What I did not fully see then was that God was already holding what I feared I might lose. That moment became less about the information I received and more about the invitation to walk differently, with trust instead of certainty.

Lesson

When fear rises, we cannot control what comes, but we can choose how we frame it and how we respond. Fear does not have to dictate the story, even when its weight feels overwhelming. The decision to lean into faith rather than collapse under fear is what allows strength to emerge. Choosing to meet uncertainty with faith does not erase the hard realities, but it creates space for courage and resilience to grow.
